I resisted the urge to buy a couple of Birkenstocks for about 2 yrs. They’re pretty pricey for a sandal, and I just didn’t know how long the crunchy sandal look will be in vogue, especially in Manhattan City where I live.
Then I got the annoying, mysterious foot accidental injuries, and my podiatrist told me I couldn’t wear any super flat shoes—effectively ruling out almost every pair of sandals POST owned—right as summer was rounding the corner.
So I did it—I pulled apart the trigger and bought some orgeous, supportive, white Birkenstocks. This feet were happy. My wallet would defeat it. But I seemed to be obsessed.
At the period, I was gearing up for any big trekking trip inside Peru with REI Journeys; we’d be spending several days in Cusco, Peru, hiking Macchu Picchu after which it heading up to the actual high Andes mountains for a multi-day lodge-to-lodge trek. I needed to bring a pair of sandals that would hold my foot injury via flaring up (especially with all the time I’d be shelling out hiking), and could serve since my ~chill~ sandals inside the lodges or while strolling around town…but I sure as hell wasn’t about to bring my shiny white wine, brand-new Birkenstocks on you’ll need stamina hiking trip, complete using llamas and alpacas in abundance. Le dilemma.
Luckily, somewhere on the internet, I stumbled across the waterproof version of the classic Birkenstock Arizona sandals—and for fewer than half of the $100+ price of the leather along with cork versions. (FYI, you’re not supposed to get that classic Birks super wet so it can damage the house and compromise the sealant, in accordance with the brand. )
Now, I didn’t even aim to resist; I snagged a set of black Birkenstock Arizona Basics (Buy It, $45, amazon. com), which are made of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) a brilliant light plastic polymer that may be flexible and feels nearly like foam under you.
And, TBH, I almost hate to convey it, but I could even love these babies greater than the originals. Because they’re made of EVA, they’re totally water-proof, easy to clean, float when you drop them in your body of water, and they are also insanely comfortable. While they aren’t quite as supportive since the classic cork Birkenstocks (which are known internet marketing great for your feet, thanks to their orthotic-like footbeds), they’re extremely comfortable, since the EVA gives cushion-like give. It can evoke you’re walking on tiny memory foam platforms.
I’ve since worn all of them for long walks around Manhattan City, to the beach, on boats, around your house, and for walks inside the woods—these things go everywhere and still look perfect. I bought a charcoal pair because I assumed I’d personally get them dirty, although after seeing how effortlessly they rinse off, I might need to buy a number of their bright colorways far too. (Which, honestly, at solely $45, who can withstand?!) The brand presently offers 11 different colors of the waterproof sandal on Amazon, such as khaki green, bright lilac, coral, metallic copper, in addition to scuba blue. They have a creamsicle orange colouring that’s, like, pure, summer joy within a shoe.
Reviewers agree that these sandals is also the freaking best; 75 percent belonging to the 6, 814 reviewers on Amazon impart them with five stars, and they really are also ranked a #1 Best Seller on Amazon regarding women’s slide sandals. One reviewer, who has damaged leather Birks for “about 20 years now, usually enjoying a new pair every couple of years” says that they thought to give the EVA Az Essentials a shot, and been for a while loving them: “I wore these nearly every day for about 8 months and I think I could probably keep enjoying a while, but they are searching a bit worn. I am just impressed with these. Personally i think as though I surely got my $40 worth people out of them. ” The reviewer also mentions which “for $40, these are a good introduction to the people who aren’t ready to shell out the big bucks for your leather versions, and fortunately they are a great deal those who like Birkenstocks but need something waterproof. ”
In case you are interested but not to the traditional double-strap style, you can also grab a pair of their Barbados Essentials slides (Buy The idea, $40, amazon. com), Gizeh Basics T-strap sandal (Buy It, $45, amazon. com), or even a pair of the Birkenstock Honolulu Sandal (Buy Them, $40, amazon. com), a new supportive flip flop, from the same EVA material.
All I can say is that once you’ve tried a couple of Birks (leather or EVA) in conversation with go back—you’ll be absolutely hooked.
