Several grade 3 and 4 patients develop chronic wounds and may also be fatal due to ulcer complications such as sepsis and osteomyelitis. The incidence of pressure ulcers continues to constitute a geriatric complication. Nutritional impairment, chronic diseases affecting multiple systems, and immobility predispose to aging of the skin in elderly patients, thus increasing vulnerability to ulcer pressure. The management of pressure ulcers requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary method. Major factors considered include patient pathologies such as lung disease, peripheral vascular disease, primary disease severity, nutritional status, co-morbidities, etc. Pressure ulcer treatment attempts to avoid preventable circumstances.
